Chuvisco , Wax, wood, bricks, photo and text in booklet

Chuvisco is an installation exploring memory, invention and the limits of perception. The piece originates from a 1940's family photograph, taken of a group of children in the Brazilian countryside. Writer Felipe Arruda received the image as a gift from an older gentleman present in the photograph as a young boy.

Inspired by this image, Felipe wrote a short story of a man recalling his childhood in his walled farm. Gazing on a cherished photo taken in the adjacent farm the man fondly remembers in great detail his adventures with his best friend, Chuvisco. Further examining the photo the man cannot find himself in the scene. He wonders if he ever crossed the wall at all.

Brian Fernandes-Halloran, having befriended Felipe at the Homebase artist-in-residence program, created a full room installation inspired by the story. Brian worked with wax to create the boy, delicately poised in a decisive moment. The high imposing wall hides most of the room. The viewer, like the man in story, fills the unseen with stories of past that may or may not have really occurred.
